Default Need help! mustang runs rich

I have a 88 mustang gt. Stock except for mac headers , h pipe, and mufflers. The car seems to sputter a little bit at an idle but doesnt die. But under a load ( 1/2 throttle or more) it sputters really bad. It seems to run very rich the fumes burn your eyes if you open the window. I pulled the codes today and got 23,94,44,33. Any suggestions on where i should start?

I honestly dont know since i just recently got the car. Everything LOOKS new, but that doesnt mean much. You think i should just start with a tune up? What about the codes, any idea on those?

22: MAP/BAP sensor code. Going to need to know whether or not your car is a California '88 model, or whether or not you have MAF. This could be the cause of the running rich.

33: EGR valve position sensor/EGR valve regulator. This could make it sputter.

44 & 94: TAB/TAD solenoid's for the Air pump system. This will not affect your complaints, but can cause a lean condition via a vacuum leak.

It is not California model nor is it MAF.

I have hooked up a vacuum pump to the egr and put 5lbs of pressure, this made it sputter but it did not die. That should mean the egr is good, right? I am able to see the diaphragm moving also.

It should come fairly close to dying when you do that. It did do something, so that's a good sign. Let me get up some specs on the position sensor and get back to you.

Alright let me know.

Also, do you think i should just go ahead and change the map sense that code came up?

i just looked back over this post and realized you had put code 22 . I actually have code 23 - throttle position signal out of range. so my MAP should be good i assume.

Sorry about that, you're right. 23 is a TPS code. Stick a voltmeter in there and see what it's doing. A safe range for idle speed is 0.6 - 1.1 volts, with a gradual, steady increase up to 4.5~ volts WOT.

I have already replaced the TPS thinking of it being a problem and i set it at .9 i believe.

What have you gathered on the egr position sensor?

Also the tab and tad solenoids throwing codes you said could make it run lean. If that is happening would the computer try to compensate causing it to run too rich?
