a buddy of mine said it would be ok when you change gears to just pull out the shims and just reuse them on the new/used gears. he said i wont have to get anything just reuse the crush sleeve and everything. everything Ive read says to get new. will it work??

ring and pinion is NOT something i would go on the cheap with.

doing it again is way more than buying the right stuff to start

Anyone that wants to garantee their work. Will want to send you on your way with new parts. Including a crush sleeve.

Will it work. Sure it may but can you trust it. Who knows, maybe your buddy will garantee the job and you're good. Personally I wouldn't bother.

As for reusing shims. Definately a good place to start. Set the pinion depth with the old shims and CHECK. Most of the time it's what you need but I would never just reuse shims without checking.

The hesitation that you feel is commonly refered to as your gut feeling... If I were you I would follow it...

We reused everything on my old '02 when we put in the 3.73's. I don't reccommend doing it, but we were pressed for time (i was in the military, and had to be two states away the next day). Held up fine, no whining, no issues at all till i got rid rid of the car 2 years later (40,000 miles later). they were Ford gears.

Like you said you were in a hurry. If the OP can change everything out I reccommend that he should..
