Hello all,
I was able to steal my uncles 87 mustang for the month with the promise I'd work on it. Unfortunately the car sat outside without running since last june (the last time I had it). Since last June I have had a new problem emerge. The muffler on the passenger has a extremely loud rattling noise. When I went to look at the muffler as the car was running I could see it flexing up and down almost as if rocks were getting thrown around in there. Would anyone have any suggestions as to how I could stop this rattling/flexing possibly without replacing the muffler? Thanks for the help

For the diagnoisis time and time to actually empty out these, probably 20 year old mufflers. Just replace them.

Just look under there, its not that hard. My car's exhaust had rattling problems to, I found out the some of the welds were completely broken which caused my noise. i just bought new ones

is the rattle in the muffler or just part of the exhaust? if in the muffler, just get new mufflers. more then likely rust has done its job on the inside and a baffle broke loose. if the exhaust is rattling around, make sure none of the hangers have broken nor any rubber isolators have broke.

welds might be broken (rust). does it have a stock exhaust???

could be anything really......broken baffle inside....hangers.....inside of the cats could have blown through.....you never know.... 23 year old muffler, if stock.....would be beneficial to replace
