Installing Speedometer Gear with a 3.73 rear end

Just need to know how to install the Speedometer Gear on a 90 mustang gt with a T5 with 3.73 rear end. i got the $25 kit from Late Model Resto.

It goes into the transmission. Find the speedo cable and take out the bolt that holds it in. Slide it out of the transmission, the speedo gear will be on the end and has a little c clip on the end that can be taken off with a flat blade screwdriver of pliers. reverse the process to reassemble.

Bigger gear goes on tailshaft of transmission. Remove transmission see T-5 rebuild to do what is necessary.

did you buy the red driven gear that c-clips on the end of the cable? or a different drive gear (ring gear that clips on the tailshaft) or both ??

all you need with a '90 and 3.73 is the red 21t driven gear and your good

takes 5 minutes and a 10mm socket (maybe 8mm i forget)

7/16 or 11mm

I just bought the whole pack which came with a 7 tooth drive gear with retaining clip and a 21 tooth driven gear with retaining clip. (1) 21 Tooth Speedo Gear
(1) 7 Tooth Speedo Drive Gear
(1) Drive Gear Clip
(1) Driven Gear Clip

so i dont need to install the 7 toothed gear?

no, you already have it in there. as long as you still have the 1990 T5, save it and if you ever rebuild your trans, pop it on then just to have a fresh one. you have to disassemble the tranny to get to it. it clips on the output shaft.

if you had a newer trans you would need it, cuz 1991 and newer (maybe '92 and newer) + all aod's are a 8t drive and you can only correct to 3.27 with ford stuff. the 23t is NOT a ford gear, it's a jeep gear and is the wrong pitch, it WILL wear out

best bet though.... pop a 6t if you ever pull the trans apart, then you can correct all the way to 4.30's

7t can be corrected to 3.73 with a 21t and 4.10 with the 23t

thats just FYI
