Power Steering Overflow and Sticky Steering

Hi Guys:

I bought a 91 Mustang for road track racing this year. So far everything is great, one issue i am having though is the power steering pump spews fluid out of the cap. I notice my steering was very sticky, so when i had the car jacked up the other day, with the car off, i started turning the wheel back and forth attempting to see where the steering stickyness was coming from. Just as i reach the last 1/4 turn of the wheel, i hear a sound like air bubbles through fluid, then drip drip, look over and the power steering fluid is coming right out of the reservoir.... out of the cap...

Anyone have any idea? or why the steering is sticky?
The steering is actually only sticky when you first try to move the wheel, once the wheel is moving it's fine, but when you hold a certain steering angle, it's like you need to crack it lose again to get it moving...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Sounds like a problem with the rack. Most likely the gear set that pushes the rods in and out has worn down, causing the rods to angle themselves slightly, which would create the stick, and introduce air into the system as it would create a suction bypass at the seals.

Replace the rack.
