Default Noisy Lifters a week after roller rocker install.

I installed my Scorpion 1.72 roller rockers (pedestal mount) about a week ago. I took it out tonight and noticed the lifters were awful loud. I followed the instructions exactly. I torqued them all to 20ft Lbs it took a little past 1/4 turn but not quite to half a turn but real close. From what ive read and researched that is ideal. If you have any info let me know. Thanks for the help.

Did you pre-load the lifters when you changed the rockers?

You might have to wait till one of the more engine performance knowledgeable guys chimes in

sounds like you may have collapsed a lifter, which could lead to you removing the intake and replacing them all.

Here's what I'd do to troubleshoot it.

Remove the valve covers, rockers and pushrods. Make sure none of the pushrods are bent.
remove the spark plugs (this will allow you to rotate the engine easily)
remove your distributor
Get a 1/4" drill to socket adapter, a nine inch 1/4" extension, and a deep 1/4" socket. Put these on a power drill. Corded is preferable... they last longer.
slide the socket and extension down through the distributor hole and onto the oil pump driveshaft, put the drill in reverse.
Get a deep 15/16 1/2" socket and a 1/2" ratchet. Put the socket on the crank.
Use the drill to continuously prime the oil system while slowly turning the engine in 1/6 to 1/4 CLOCKWISE rotations.

This should rebuild pressure in your lifters, hopefully one of them is just stuck and flowing oil up into them MAY free them up.

If you do everything I have listed above, don't have any bent pushrods, and nothing looks broken while doing what I have posted... and the noise is still there. It's time for 16 new lifters.

Did you set the rockers when each lifter was on the camshaft's base circle?

Yes its was at the cams base circle. I was afraid it might be lifters but I just wanted to check. I will try the drill technique and see if i can get them pumped back up.

Are you certain it's lifters and not just the rockers? Many performance designed roller rockers are noisy, my Crane units are a factory piece and the car sounds like a freakin sewing machine.

Otherwise, yeah, do what Adder said to find out if it's a lifter problem.

Another thing to consider would be pushrod length. If they're too short, they may cause possible ticking as you described. When I upgraded to stamped steel 1.7 rockers(on my previous GT-40 head) my pushrods ended up being too short. Again something to think about. And I agree with 67mustang, my valvetrain in both of my cars are a bit noisy as well.

RRs are noiser but are you sure that they are not hitting the valve cover? since they are new did you run the car for a while and then re torque them correctly? they could be loose and making a chattering sound
