The 5.Slow goes to the track!
Okay, not yet, but probably this weekend I'll be taking it over to the dragstrip. I've had the car a few weeks now, it runs really well, but doesn't feel as powerful as I expected it would. My brother in law has a Sentra Spec V that I've driven a lot, and it feels a bit faster than my car. Track tests for that car stock are mid-15's, so I'd bet my Mustang runs about a low 16 second 1/4 mile.
That doesn't sound out of line to me, weren't they around 15 second cars brand new? 18 years of driving, even though it's low mileage, probably some small losses somewhere. I haven't given it a tune up yet, either.
The guy I bought it from is the neighbour of the original owner, and told me that the car has a chip in it, but seeing as everything else is bone stock, and it feels slower than it should, I don't know if I believe that. Where do I look to see if it does have a chip? Maybe it has a crappy chip that is robbing power!? I don't know..
Any other guesses on track time? I'll post the times after I go, see who is closest. It's a 5-speed, and I would say I'm reasonably experienced at performance shifting. The car has new h-rated summer tires.

Alot of those old reflash chips just weren't that great, and their prices reflected it. In the 90s alot of people would get excited about the claims the chipmakers made, and would blow the $120 or so on the Superchip and then be greatly disappointed. Remember this was old school computer technology and even Winblows 95 was still 8 years away when your car was built. Those old Superchips just ramped up the timing and dumped in more fuel throughout the curve, which is fine if you always run 93 octane and you've done mods to add more air to the engine as well as spark and fuel. On a bone stock motor running 87 octane, I wouldn't be shocked if it actually struggled to run right with an older chip installed. Finding out what chip, if any, has been put in your computer sure would be helpful in diagnosing any engine problems...

Bone Stock you should hit a low 15 second time.. Somewhere in the 15.2-15.6 range. A stock 5.0 should out run a spec-v no problem... When my 5.0 was stock I went a 60ft. of 2.07 and ended the quarter at 15.2 @ 89MPH and it had 120,000 miles on it, but was very well taken care of. And we advanced the timing.. Let us know how it goes, NO 5-spd car should see 16's, auto's maybe, but 5 spds run high 14's low to mid 15's no problem.

Thanks for the replies. Where can I find this chip, then? I'm not familar with the computer on my car.
So basically, if I run a 16 or higher, I can assume there is a problem with the car, and start hunting around for what might be causing it. I suspect the catback exhaust (a cheapie stock replacement one!) is restrictive, and the cats look original, so I'll know where to start looking. It just passed emissions, though, so the cats must be flowing still, right?

Yea if u run 16s then there is something wrong with the car. i ran 14.8 in my 93 gt totally stock and that was with bald street tires. if u feel the car not accelerating like u think it should then there could be something wrong. when i first got mine i noticed it didnt have the pep is should and it was a dirty throttle body after cleaning it out, it was back to being fast again, just something simple like that.
