Idling too high
Hey everyone,

I've been having some trouble with the idle on my 88 GT. After the car gets to the operating temp.the rpms seem to climb to an unnecessary height. When I come to a stop and push the clutch in it jumps to anywhere from 1500-1800 rpm. Now I've heard several sources say it could be the TPS is out of the voltage norm. I've already replaced the IAC, o2 sensors, cleaned the TB and pretty sure there are no vacuum leaks. If it is the Throttle Position Sensor, are they simply replaced oris there a way to adjust the voltage. Also, I've heard the norm is .94-.99v, now is that 0.94 or 12.94? Thanks

I think its .94. I had the exact same problem. If you havnt recently touched your EGR stuff and vacuum hoses, its definately the TPS, and yes you have to get a new one, the internals are messed up, its a common problem. If you have been putting in headers, and taking vacuum lines off and on, you could have a leak somewhere, but TPS is in first place as of now, took care of my idle like a champ.

To save gas until you get a new one, disconnect your Idle Air control, and manually decrease idle with TB screw.

Thanks for the input, ya I was ahead of the game on unplugging and backing out the screw until I got the rpm around 750, alright for now I guess, but I want to get it taken care of quickly.

stock setting is .92 - .94 for optimum performance set it at .99 or 1.0.
to set it you need to nick the green and orange wire. put a digital volt meter on it set it to dc volts. when key is in run it should be around .79 to .85 when car is running it should be at idle around those. you adjust it youll need to take the sensor off and elongate the mounting holes. to get some play. and then mount it and slightly turn it to it reads .99 or 1.0. thats it. then tighten it but DONT OVER TIGHTEN it you will break the screw housing on the TB. then your screw. unless you have a extra TB
