ignition switch (cylinder) positions??? what are they?

for a 1989 5.0, what are the postions when you insert the ignition key. i noticed that with the key in, the cylinder does not go back a position. just forward once, and nothing happens, then again to turn on all dash lights/ fuel pump, and finally once more to actually start the car. im installing an aftermarket radio, and the previous owner cut the factory harnesses.

i was just wondering in what position is the cylinder going to be when you want to listen to the radio, with the car off...im trying to find a wire that has 12v power when the ignition cylinder is in the first position forward, but no luck......

do you have a test light or volt meter ?

you should have at least 1 switched power in the fusebox that is unused. maybe not but i would guess you have 1 since notchbacks are typically missing options that were on other cars such as foglights and vert top etc.

anyways... if you have 1, just use a spade connector in it for the power wire, thats the easiest way and you dont need to splice anything

The first position you feel is the one where the key locks in the cylinder. No power there. The next one forward is the run postion or key on. Forward one more is the start position. There should be one position that goes back as soon as you put the key in also.

Is there any radio wiring left at all? The main key on power wire for the radio is yellow with a black stripe.
