Because the torque spec on the headgaskets is for an unloaded head. If you have pushrods that are tight against the rockers, you're creating backpressure against the bolts, and it will show correct torque early.

if you put 24lb injectors in, you are getting waaaaay too much fuel and sd has no way to compensate for it...good job

put your 19lb stock ones back in or convert to mass air.

Car has had 24lb'ers since the day I started owning it and ran beautifully. No problems whatsoever and that was back when it was stock.

Should I have uninstalled the rockers before I put on the heads?

Unless you added and subtracted , multiplied then divided to get the extra torq needed to compensate for the pressure pushing up from the pushrods,,(as if that were possible) you need to pop the rocker covers of and loosen the rocker arms then re check the torq on the heads.

unless you got lucky and went past the proper torq for the heads to begin with, i wouldn't feel good about it! Do what you want, but i wouldn't chance having to redo head gaskets just to not have to torq the rockers!!

It's what the car had when we got them so we just replaced it with the same.

@Snake: You're very correct. I decided to do this yesterday and the rockers were unusually loose.

Car will now at least idle on it's own but still surges like a **** and the idle is a kind where it's on the verge of dying.

Did you put the smog stuff back on. If not did you plug hole on the back of the heads. It's a 5/8-11 about 3/4 long.

On the back of the drivers side head there's a hole that needs plugged. I did the same thing. It idled like it had a cam in it plugged the hole and smoothed right up.
