Wow. You guys are absolutely correct and can't believe I didn't see that. We were looking all over the heads for it so we could mount at least the smog piping to fool emissions.
Plugged that up and took off the exploder intake ,now there's no smoke and the car idles but still surges. Driveable though. Now just a simple timing issue. Thanks guys!
Seems the exploder intake might have been a little much for the SD computer. MAF conversion better be on my list next I guess.
Also, what's the little white sensor on the stock lower manifold toward the distributor on the driver's side for? It's called Air Charge Temperature sensor.

i'm running the explorer intake with no issues, a host of other parts with a stock cam tho...it'd be interesting to know what your real issue was, but glad to hear you got it worked out. just try doing a base idle reset to get rid of that surging idle. the air charged temp sensor tells the comp the temp of the air flowing into the combustion chamber. some people tap it into the explorer intake where it should be and others just let it hang, but it does need to be hooked up
