Default 5.0 troubles

I just bought a 1983 Mustang because it had a nice body and a swapped 302 which seemed to be running alright.

I got the sucker home and saw the vacuum advance was unhooked so I got some vacuum hose and hooked it up. Well the 302 now seems like it is out of time and bogged down. I have checked and replaced the plugs to find the old ones had oil on the threads.

The motor is a 1980 possibly from a thunderbird is my best guess and it has a carburetor. I am wondering what I can do to avoid a complete rebuild or is it inevitable? If so should i just look for a newer 302 at a junk yard and start there?

thanks!

Make sure the vacuum hose is hooked up to a source that only gets vacuum when the throttle is opened. Try to re set the timing. Or if it ran good before, just leave it off.

Won't leaving it off throw the timing off in higher RPMs? I think the plugs were just wet not oily because there was no rocky carbon but I think they are wet because the fuel air mix is too rich.
