Problems with maxing out the 85mph speedo on trip odom?

Hey guys, I have an 87, therefore I've got the stock 85mph speedo. I'm headed to the track on wednesday (Milan, MI) This is my problem. My buddies and I usually play around on the way there. This usually entails high speed driving on I-75. If I get the speedo needle to hit the trip odometer, I bet that will mess it up won't it? It seems that other people must have this problem. Since I'm figuring the needle must be at around 100 or so? (I don't know how accurate it is let alone past 85) Any thoughts guys?

Mine has bounced off the trip reset button many many times without damage to the needle.

push it hard enough and it will snap the needle. get a 140MPH speedo from a 88-89 5.0, they bolt right in, and plug right in.
