Default HELP-starter trouble

i have a 91 mustang with a 79 351w and a b&m c6 tranny.when i got the car it sounded like the starter was dragging and then yesterday the starter went out.i pulled the starter and it is off of the 91 5.0.i tried replacing it with 4 different ones for the 351 and none of them would bolt up.i put another 5.0 starter on the car and it worked for about 10 cranks and started doing it again.its like the teeth on the starter arnt long enough to grab the fly wheel.i turned the whole motor over and checked the whole fly wheel and all the teeth on the fly wheel are long and well defined just minor scratching on the very bottom of them.it looks like a new fly wheel as well my question is why does this starter so noisy and sound like its dragging and when i change it out it burns up in no time?

How long was the original (the one that stopped working first '91 5.0)starter on the car? Had you been driving this car for a while?

I think the rear housing on starter is different for manual and auto trans. This and the fact of C6. Starter bolts to bellhousing? Check with B&M and see what they advise. Advance people mean well but....Some of their folks just not up to speed or aint car people.Usually one in the placethat is good lady named Chrissy just quit at local here was good.

well i shimmed it (yes in the middle of the night by candle light lol) and for about 4 or 5 cranks was no noise.then on the sixth crank the noise started to come back.i added another shim with the same result and now its like the starter dont want to turn the motor over.it could be the fact the starter is too weak really(i have an 11:1 compression ratio) or something else i just dont know its really wierd and starting to get to me any ideas on this one?

btw i used 2 thin washers (for a total of about 1.25 mm of thickness) i cut them in half i know its not the best shim but it worked.i let the car cool down for the past 20 mins and it cranked up but im wondering if the battery aint weak now lol one thing to the other

auto and manual starters are the same for mustangs but having the c6 kinda messes with it. Just remove it and drop in a c4 and you won't have any more issues lol

well i got it fixed for $25 plus tax,had the gear on the starter replaced with a 10t instead of the standard 9t and it only took the place 5 minuets to change it out.40 cranks later still no noise.wwwiiiieeeeeeeerrrrrdddddd lol and yes a c4 would have ended my trouble but more costly im trying to sell the car since i cant afford the insurance sadly cuz i love my stang
