Default STUPID starting problems..

ok so i have a 87 car with 89 motor (5.0L), the car has had starting problems the whole time ive owned the car, most of the problems fixed, but right now the starter wont disengage. It doesnt do it every time tho, but sometimes ill start the car like any other day and when the engine fires up the starter doesnt turn off and it sounds like hell, the only way to stopit is to stall the car and even when the key is turned back to off the car is still tryin to start, ive been told its probably the ignition switch, ive already taken the switch off and plan to get a new one soon, is this it?
thanks sorry for the story

Sounds like the starter solenoid is bad. If it's original, I'd replace it.

Could be. I'v had the great joy of buying parts that are bad right out of the box.

Use a jumper cable, and jump the two large posts of the solenoid. If the engine spins easily, the solenoid is bad. If it just clicks, then the solenoid is good and the problem is somewhere else.
