Cold air intake issue

Cold air intake issue
Hey it's been a long while since I've posted on here, I had to set my Mustang projects on hold as life has been challenging.
I brought my mustang out of retirement a couple weeks ago and actually drove it farther than a few blocks around town and it's ran fine. I started thinking that the fender well cold air was a bit tedious as I don't really like spending the extra time every other month to clean/oil up the filter. So I purchased a different filter, the bbk-1742. Since I did not really change anything from the MAF sensor and closer to the engine I figured it would be ok, BUT with it not being in the fender with an extra tubing section, the engine hesitates when I press on the gas peddle. It sounds as if my exhaust is clogged up almost, having a muffled non consistent sound when it should be a consistent sound.
My question really to sum it up is wondering if there is anything I can tweak around so that it does run back to normal without having to put the fender well kit back in. thanks!

Maf stayed the same, i did not change that. The only part i took out was the section of tubing after the maf that connected the maf to the filter in the fender. If i use the same filter even with the same maf it has the same hesitation if it's NOT in the fender well. Why would having it in or out of the fender well make any type of difference. Only thing i can think of is that now the filter is basically attached to the MAF instead of having half a foot of tubing inbetween the two, therefore creating improper air flow to the maf?
I tried using 2 older MAF's that have worked fine with my current set up, and with the one I currently have, all have had the same type of response as currently happening.

Haha I just tried that right before you suggested that. It still has the same issue with the 'clogged/hesitated' feel. I reset it a couple times to be completely sure, but still same issue.

st curious have you attempted the tried and true method of flogging the ever loving **** out of it to see if it clears up? Also have you tried bumping the timing? I'm assuming that you run premium with your setup, it sounds like its running rich, have you cleaned you MAF? I know I'm shooting questions but it just sounds strange.

I am running premium for sure and the maf is definitely clean, i did that when i replaced the filter section today. I do have the psi bumped up quite a bit on the fuel pressure regulator because when I dropped in the newer engine setup it was running way lean. That could be it if it's changing the dynamics of the airflow.
I didn't try turning up the timing from where it's at.
I don't want to take it out and burn some rubber because it just feels like it will freaking pop like crazy and/or something will explode. Lol. So if I really need to that will be my last test, but I did end up driving it around and ran it a tid bit hard (around 4200-4500 rpms before i'd let off) just around town though so nothing too bad.

Put the old setup back on it......problem solved......
The MAF likes having the right flow of air, too much turbulence can cause it to act up. This is one reason why everyone says to have the MAF straight up and down but sometimes having it cocked sideways some can help. I have seen it done on multiple setups with good results.

haha alright alright... I'll put my old set up back and just deal with the filter being inside the fender well.
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions though everyone, greatly appreciated!
