Default How much grease in universal joint?

Hey, I'm putting in a new universal joint. I have the grease gun and need to pump some grease into it, I just want to know how much should I put? Do I just pump it in until it get's hard to pump anymore? Will the excess just squeeze its way out on it's own? Or should I be careful how much I pump in?

If you pump too much it should just release the grease out somewhere....or the pump will become hard to pump.

You can never add too much grease in joints. The excess just leaks and makes things messy.

Just pump it a minimum of 3-5 times and from that point on just do what you think you should. I would pump until I see a little of grease coming out, or if you cant see it coming out then just pump a few more times and determine if you should go more....

Yes you can add too much grease to a u-joint and blow out the seal. You add just enough to where you see the sides of the rubber bulge. It's okay to go a bit further to where it just barely starts to come out around it. Too much grease is like putting too much oil in your engine or tranny, it causes the extra pressure to ruin the seals or cause leaks.

It would not affect how much oil is in my tranny or engine, this is just the universal joint, it's not even connected to either part, it's just the cross shaped thingy that connects the driveshaft to the yoke of the transmission. I am going to install it before pumping it with grease, if I try to do it before, it'll pop out all the end caps and mess up the needle bearings, lol.

Anyway, I guess I'll just pump it until I see a tiny little bit of grease start squeezing its way out. Any excess should spin itself out when it runs... I don't think it's an airtight seal in there...

Thanks for the advice guys.

i wouldn't let excess grease just spin itself off under my car.. its not gonna hurt anything, but bearing grease has got to be one of THE messiest things i've ever had to deal with multiple times. i can't imagine that crap all over the bottom of my baby.
