Mustang powered Volvo Wagon. 65mm Throttle body?
Hi everyone,
I have a 1989 Volvo 740 station wagon with a 1990 V8 5.0 crammed under the hood. 5 speed manual with 3:31.1 rear end gear ratio.
It is a Ford Motorcraft rebuilt '90 engine with EFI and Mass Air. I have a 2.5 inch true dual Borla exhaust system with dual cats, and a K&N cone filter.
I am running the stock intakes and am going to get a 65mm throttle body...should I get a 70mm? I drive the car 100 miles a day, so I am thinking the 65 would be better. I also would not have to machine my intake like I would with the 70MM?
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Ed

It is integrated very well, runs like a normal car.
I am still in the process of tidying up all of the wiring.
So, just about to order...are the "power" brand TB's ok for these cars, or are they crap.
Thanks,
Ed

I was going to build my own when I found this one at a good price. I have over $18k in reciepts from the build labor, donor mustang, exhaust work, drive shaft fabrication, etc...
I bought it for way, way less than that. They are out there in the 5-6k range. This one is amazingly fast. Now I really need to get my LSD unit installed to really make it a sleeper!
Now that I have one and know what is involved, I would like to build my own.
Hey, what kind of HP gain should I expect from a 65mm throttle body? 10-20 HP? With my true dual exhaust setup, I imagine a decent gain is to be had.

Hmmm, so maybe 5 HP or so...What about the 70mm? It would not be worth the money at this point for such a small gain.
I may just forget it and apply the cash to the powertrax traction control unit...I can spin the rear in 3rd gear anytime...the LSD would be a big help with traction.
As for the sleeper effect...great with cops, but It is hard to get anyone to "go" until I have gotten the jump on them and they figure it out. I have embarrassed quite a few imports recently. It is funny, the best description of the exhaust sound I have gotten was an offshore boat. Quiet at idle but roars when opened up!
A real problem I am having now is the stock Volvo brakes as they are not up to the task. I had the car flying well into 5th gear and the brakes did not really start to bite until just under an indicated 90mph, it was scary. I really need to look ahead before putting my foot into it.
The best part of the car is the ability to power merge. Seems that people don't want to get stuck behind an old Volvo wagon merging onto the freeway, so they speed up. When I step on it and take the spot anyway, it makes me laugh.
Not being a mustang or even a car guy (always rode and raced motorcycles), I need solid, reliable hop up info for this motor...I don't know much about these cars.
Thanks,
Ed

70mm wont do you no good at all with a stock HO intake. TBs dont really give you HP they help free it up when you team them up with a good H/C/I combo. use the money else where. now when youre ready to do a H/C/I combo then worry about a TB
