Default welded intake question

Hey im Paul. im new and recently picked up my 88 gt. trying to get it all straightened out and on the road. i am not new to cars, fords, or even mustangs but have never seen this before so i figured i would ask.
anyone have any ideas why my intake would have been cut and welded back together?

the only thought i have is that they cut it open to port it, but i havent pulled it off to find out yet. has anyone else heard of this?

thanks in advance.
PAul

God, that's stupid... the performance gains would be marginal at best for all the work it would take to do something like that. I would pull that garbage off my car so quick it wouldn't be funny. I weep for the human race when I see crap like this.
