Really simple question.
Do 302’s have a mechanical fuel pump or electric in tank fuel pump?
I did a quick search for aftermarket fuel pumps (thinking it might answer my question) but I found both aftermarket mechanical fuel pumps and aftermarket in tank electric fuel pumps.
As far as I can tell 302’s used to be carbureted. Two barrel carb then 4 barrel. Then ford started using a speed density based fuel injection setup from 86-88 and then a MAF based fuel injection system from 88+. Right now I’m assuming that ford had a low pressure mechanical fuel pump for all carbureted 302’s (up until 85?) then in 86 switched to a electric in tank fuel pump when they went to fuel injection and needed higher fuel pressures? im hoping someone can set me straight on what fuel systems came in what years.
The reason im asking this is because I do plan on building a twin turbo 302 fox but I really wanted to get as much info as I could about this platform before I started the build. Right now im trying to figure out a good fuel system. I’m almost positive ill need to upgrade the fuel pump to keep up with the motors fuel needs (no idea what the stock pump maxes out at), but as you can tell I’m a little lost. Right now it seams like a 88-93 GT would be the best platform to build off of and a simple AN- fuel setup with duel in tank 255lph walbros should be able to provide plenty of fuel.
Anyone have any info/suggestions/pointers/ect?
