Default Can't get rear shocks off

Im trying to remove the rear shock and the upper nut just rotates and doesn't come off? I have it supported by the frame and the rear. I tried both sides and the nut rotates with the threaded rods its on. Anyone have any ideas?

I use a small wrench or adjustable wrench to hold the threaded stud at the top while loosening the nut, you dont need a special tool.

blast the daylights out of it with pb blaster...
let it soak in, then hit it with an impact wrench...

thats how mine came off. quick and easy, took an hour total

if you have access to an impact gun, use that. The reason it is just spinning is probably because of the "thread lock" they put on it. If you are not re using the shocks, you can use the vise grip method mentioned above, otherwise I wouldn't advise it. If none of that works, you can try carefully heating the nut to make the threadlock a little more, ummm, loose?

Just reach into the fenderwell and grab a-hold of the top "tube" of the shock while you loosen the nut with a ratchet. If it's too tight to hold by hand grab it with some channel locks.

I tried some locking pliers on the rod and it started stripping it a little. I also, hit it with PB blaster. I think an impact gun would work best, but don't have one.

I took the shocks back and won't try again until I can find the special tool that is shaped like the top of the rod.

Nemesis, that sounds like a good idea to hold the rod from under the fender well, I'll try that too next time. I just can't beleive the first thing in 6 years that I can't do is shocks...lol.

Thanks guys!

deep well impact socket and 6-9" extension. Put it over the nut and start bending it back and forth... You will eventually break the strut shaft. I do this on just about every old car that has that type of shock.

My S10 included!

+1 for impact, there's plenty of room in the hatch for it, I've never heard of a special tool for the top, why would they make the tool when just an adjustable wrench is all thats required.
