Default mustang wont start?

my buddy has an 86 GT. last weekend is stang left him stranded a ways away from his house. here is the problem- vehicle won't start. sometimes turning the key to the "on" position will shut off all power inside the car. turn the key to the start position and same thing but always. threw in a new starter, starter solenoid, and ignition switch, same result. cleaned battery terminals-nothing. so basically the starter will not crank the engine over at all. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

How many Volts does the battery have in it?

Have you tried starting it while jump starting it?

Yep tried to jump start it the day that it happened and no luck and the battery has 12.7 volts, more than enough to at least get the starter turning.

Thanks for the input though.

Check the ground wires. There's either an open or realy highly corroded wire somewhere not allowing power to pass.

Check your main cables, both + and -, and make sure you don't have a broken wire that's partially making contact.

Turn the key to on. Short the 2 terminals on the starter with a long screwdriver. Should get it started so you can get it home. Unless there is a bad ground somewhere and it keeps shutting the car off.

Try what Sideways said.

Jump the two terminals on the starter solenoid (fender behind batt) and if the car cranks it is the solenoid.

I have had friends, including me, that had a solenoid go out right after I bought it.

That is the only thing that can turn everything OFF when the key is in the start position.
