+1 LOL but another note the higher spline axles will have a greater diameter also. If its a 31 and you put your stock 28 in its not going to engage the carrier teeth.
^ What he and MJR said - keep in mind you also need new axle bearings if you increase your axle diameter. No biggie, they're like $30 on Summit.
If you wanted to get fancy, you could go ahead and spring for some c-clip eliminators and some custom axles (e.g. Moser's custom axles)... would run about $150 and they're required for cars that run 10's (11's?) by the NHRA IIRC (someone correct me on this if I'm wrong).

The 31 spline axles do not increase axle diameter in the bearing area so the stock bearings still work.
LOL well the fox rearends use a 10x14 quad gear tooth pattern and the SN uses a 10x16 quad gear setup. Which is almost like the difference in a 28 spline and 31 spline axle! That's all it is but there a bit stronger from the factory! So. If you have SN you can just upgrade the axle and use 28 spline and not have to but a new carrier!
