Default Distributor - steel or cast iron gear?

I am going to replace my distributor on my '89 GT. Seems I have two options, steel or cast iron gears. I know the previous owner upgraded the cam in this, but I have NO idea what the hell he put in there... any thoughts? Also, a link to a good distributor (no refurbished) would be helpful... am leaning towards "MSD Ignition 8456 - MSD Pro-Billet Ready-To-Run EFI Distributor", for $262.95. Thanks!

Who knows. If the po replaced the cam, and it's a stock type setup, steel gear. If he replaced the cam with one that has an iron gear to work with an older dizzy, then an iron gear. If it's a billet cam, then it may or may not have a billet gear, which would require a bronze type dizzy gear.

Chances are it's a stock type cam that's a steel core with a steel gear, so it needs a steel dizzy gear, but that's just a guess.

Seems like a big guessing game... wish I could call the previous owner and simply ask him, but it was a "divorce sale", and he's long gone...

It's most likely a steel gear. Crane makes a dizzy gear that's compatible with both steel and iron, it's some kind of metallic composite.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty convinced it's steel. Maybe I'll go with the Crane gear to be safe.

You definitely want steel, and you definitely want to avoid MySparkDisappeared distributors.
