Default mechanical gauge confusion!!!

ok so i got a 86 5.0 stock 5-speed. my dad has a mechanical water temp gauge that hes letting me use. so i drilled a hole in the fire wall and ran it to the hole in the block where the sender unit was. now, the bolt that's on the original mechanical thermostat gauge is too small for my hole in the block. it will screw down but its loose and it would never work. i went to lows and got a bolt that has the hex part in the middle and the rest is threaded and it is 3/8 because that's what i was told fits the hole for the block. then i got a coupler for the other end of the bolt and its so the original thermostat bolt will bolt on which it does but the other end that goes into the block is too big. i think it has to deal with the whole metric crap. so can you guys tell me how to fix this??
