Running Hot - Timing?

Running Hot - Timing?
I advanced my timing very slightly (without a gun)
Just turned the distributor clockwise about 1/4 inch. (maybe timing is to advanced and causing it to run hot?)
I haven't noticed my electic fan working at all. Shouldn't it at least be on when I turn the car off after driving for a while.
Or is it only on when the car is running and warm?
Is there a fuse for the fan?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Running Hot - Timing?
you cant change timing without a timing gun.
jachunter, did you disconnect the SPOUT when you turned the distributor?
And I second the recommendation of buying a timing light, especially if you want to play with the timing. I wouldn't go more than 16 BTDC (with SPOUT disconnected).

Well, since you didn't disconnect the SPOUT, you probably didn't cause any harm to the motor, as the computer would just readjust the timing. But I would turn the distributor back where it was anyways.
Then get ahold of a timing light (beg, borrow, buy, steal, well don't steal ). After the car's warmed up, mark the timing mark you want on the balancer with chalk or something that'll show with the light, disconnect the SPOUT, and set the timing where you want. Reconnect the SPOUT, and then, happy motoring.
I personnally recommend you don't go more than 16 BTDC.
