T5 transmission questions

I just pulled my transmission out if my 95 gt. I had to put a new speedo gear in it. When I took the tail housing off I noticed the tail shaft can move up and down quite a bit maybe a quarter of an inch. Is this normal? If its not what else should I check?

Removing tailshaft housing took away the support on rear mainshaft bearing and cup. Put it back on and check.
