Yes there are 2 main types of Explorer intakes, internal and external EGR. The External EGR are the newer ones.

The P heads require either BBK P headers or FRPP shorties.....
OR
90 degree spark plug boots and just to be safe use the heat wrap sleeves on them..

well I have gotten the heads off of the passenger side and the cylinder walls look perfect no scars or lips at the top. looking to take the other side off tomorrow morning or Monday! im really thinking those valve seats are bad. i dont think only one side of the engine would be worn and the other side perfect.

Just because the cylinder looks nice and shiny doesnt mean its not out of round, and couldn't be letting oil pass the rings. Its hard to see or feel anything but a bad groove or taper. If you want to be sure, get a bore measure tool. And check the rings, especially on #8.

Doing the compression test would have stopped the guessing.

But would the compression test tell if it was a head gasket, valve, or blowby?

I had a set of gt40p heads on my 89 gt and i had to use shorter header plugs, and then you have to oval out the holes on the headers because of the spacing of the bolts. Other than that, I didn't really have any problems. Nothing that couldn't be taken care of in an extra half hour.

Glad I went with the regular GT40s and didn't have to mess with headers and plugs and crap. Only regret is that I dodn't get them ported before I slapped them on. Doh.
