Default Used AOD not engaging into gear

I guess I get what I paid for. I bought a used AOD that came out of an 88 stang to go into my 93. Supposedly it had been rebuilt a year ago. My mechanic installed it on Monday and told me that the transmission will not engage into any gear. They can shift the lever, plus shift it from the bottom of the car, but nothing happens. Nothing.

I took the original AOD to be rebuilt so I will know that I have a good, working tranny. Did I just get a bad deal on a tranny or is there something simple that is being overlooked? At least I will have a spare core if I need a replacement in the future. Or I may see if the guy rebuilding it wants to buy it.

The only thing I can think of would be backflushing it but, I believe it has to be able to take reverse to do it. Next one you buy, tell the mecahnic to take the pan off before installing. Dump the fluid and look in the pan for signs.

Anyways, I like the car. I have the same car but, it is a 5-speed.

Silly to ask, but is the fluid topped off? Your symptoms mirror that of a tranny that has no fluid in it.

It was full of fluid and they stopped it off with only 1 quart. The fluid that leaked out of it was clean as could be.

K, then I'd say the pump isn't working.

More or less. The pump is easy to access, but my thoughts on what is wrong could be wrong themselves. There's Youtube video's about AOD pump removal/inspection, if you're up to the task you could give it a whirl.

Also check to make sure the gasket is on the filter housing. And if it is, make sure it's in properly and not torn or offset. An easy check...Pressue Regulator Valve could be stuck OPEN in the Valve Body too. Another thing, the Torque Converter may not be engaged in the Pump Gears.
