if you were able to make the trip to my place, you know the cost to replace the pump would not be anywhere near fords price, if all went well, it'd take less than 2 hrs and you supply the pump, personally, I'd get a walbro 255 lph

So what do we replace the stock pump with if we want to actually use the entire capacity of our tanks?
No you don't have to mantain a half tank. But consistently running it less than a 1/4 tank will keep the fuel pump in air instead of in fuel... and it will indeed overheat after many, many times of doing it. Maybe I was unclear... but keeping the pump OUT of fuel consistently, and running it for long periods of time, will cause it to overheat.

Have you seen how the fuel pump is located inside of the tank? It is not at the bottom, it is at the top. When the fuel is low the pump is exposed to nothing but air and fuel vapor.

So is there another option for when I decide to replace my increasingly loud and annoying pump? I can hear the thing change pitch at idle in sync with the turn signal. LOL

To be fair, I have been running it down to E every tank for 9 years, and putting a consistent 10 gallons in every fill to monitor my mileage.

Is there some kind of inline conversion that is easy and reliable? OP might consider it if there is.

Well putting 10 gals in every time doesn't consistently run it low. When I was in college I only put in about 5 dollars worth just to get me here and there, so it was always going from E to 1/4 tank... or E to 1/8 tank... and that kept the pump out of the fuel... which is why it overheated and I had to replace two pumps in less than a year. After I learned what the problem was I kept it more than minimally fueled and 5 years later haven't had issues.

If your pump is is changing pitch when the turn signal, sounds like you have electrical problem.

sounds good to the ear and in theroy and almost logical, however, there are many people who keep low fuel in the tank, such as myself ( I never have more than 2-3 gallons in it at a time) and never have an issue, plus Tony, think of how many elec pumps that are sold that are external mount, I have a holley blue and a frame mount kicker pump on my 89, niether are submurged in fuel for "cooling" the cooling effect takes place by the pump circulating the fuel through the pump and the liquid absorbs/ removes some of the heat......it's possible your case was a result of faulty pumps. Blame it on China!!..lol

Update: Ford wanted.... wait for it.... $1,189.00 to replace my fuel pump!!! Haaaaa-Haaaa- (choke) Haaa- (cough) Haaaa!!!! Needless to say it's back home in my driveway (runs fine right now). Had to pay the $125.00 diagnostic fee - I feel I got away from those vultures cheap! Mike, AKA MJR46, will be installing a new Edelbrock 190 LPH fuel pump for me, along with some other goodies... he's the ONLY one I trust to work on my baby!

Hold on a second... was MJR the one who suggested replacing the pump? I respect MJR to the max, hell I drove 5 hours to his house to buy headers from him... But I'm pretty sure I said multiple times your fuel pump was bad.

It takes two bolts to drop the tank and a screw driver and hammer to get the locking ring off.... The fuel pump costs about $90 at a local auto parts store. Good to go.

Get it replaced and don't run low fuel levels. Game Set Match.

FYI my pump that failed and your pump that failed was OEM FORD.... not chinese... although they do make ****ty stuff. I have to go to China for 2 weeks this spring to uphold quality control on cast aluminum products that my company is getting.

Tony you were the first to say it was the fuel pump. Mike concurred with your assessment - BTW he's installing some shorty headers for me on the same day he replaces the fuel pump!
