Depends on your compression vs octane.

Assuming you under 10:1 compression and running 93 octane.. start at 6deg base timing and go from there.

btw, in my testing with a knock sensor I found that 1 octane changes would equate to 1.75 degrees of timing. (ranging from 87 to 94 octane fuels)

loosen distributor hold down just enough to be able to turn distributor, not enough that it moves on it's own (1/2" wrench or socket), attach timing light to #1 plug wire, pull spout, rotate distributor to 10* advanced for OEM specs, 12-16* is for a more advance timing that can get you a performance gain, just need to be mindful of detonation, with 93 octance probably can do 16*, I like 12-14* so I can still run regular.

base from factory with spout out is 10, no reason to start at 6 and make it a true turd. and To the op... CHECK THE STICKEY TECH ARTICLES HERE, IT'LL TELL YOU HOW TO SET TIMING!!

1) are you looking at BTDC ?

2) are you picking up signal from another wire that might be touching #1

if yes/no accordingly...find other problems and fix them, start with dumping codes
