Default mustang charge

hey eveyrbody i have a question...i was trying to put the battery on my car yesterday but everytime i tried to connect the positive cable on it sparked big time and it started melting the battery post a little. after that i tried putting the positve first but it wouldnt fit now. its like the cable was too small for the post. which i find weird since last week i had set it up just fine. i needed the car so i turned the battery over and put the - on the + and vice versa, the battery didnt spark and the car cranked just fine but immediatly it started discharging the battery. my radio wouldnt work the lights didnt work but the car was. i started hearing an electrical "wir" coming from the fuel pump real loud. So i have no clue whats going on..the car is an 88 mustang gt completely bone stock. like i said last week it was fine when i tested the car after i changed the distributor cap n rotor. any help!!!! lol thanks in advance!

Make sure your pos. cable is going to the starter solenoid and your neg. cable is grounded to engine block. Don't trust the colors of the cables. Sounds like they were swapped or (no disrespect ) you'd better read up on car maintenance.

the positive cable probably sparks cause the negative post was already hooked up. it is good battery eticate(dont know how to spell that) to disconnect the negative post first and then the positive and when re-installing them the positive first then the negative that way there is not electrical discharge.

thanks guys yea this problem made me feel really dumb but it got fixed...came out to be that yea the cables were wrong and the reason why it wouldnt work the right way was because the alternator...so got new alternator and battery and tried again and problem fixed! good thing i didnt blow any fuses or short circuited anything! lol

lmao .....sorry dude Ive seen all kinds of things on used cars in my day. Thermostat backwards , plug wires all mixed up, lug nuts on backwards , brake lines pinched off, mufflers with duct tape on em, etc etc etc...... I have never encounterd a car where they swapped the red and black battery cables but i can believe it . Im very surprised the car has never caught on fire and burned to the ground like that. If i was you I would start goin over the wiring because I can definatly smell a short comin on for ya
