a retro fitted r-12 system should be charged to 80% of the r-12 capacity with 134a

+1 on the 2 cans I find that when the system gets low enough for the compressor to cycle the clutch on and off it usually takes about to cans to fill it back to capacity.

I wouldn't advocate that philosophy, to many variables to dispute

+1 W/ mjr46. The only way to truely tell if its charged correctly is to see the pressures on both the high side and low side. Those will vary with the outside temp and humidity, but the rule of thumb I always go by is the low side should run around 40 and the high side shouldn't be more then 350. That's after taching the motor up a little (like 1500 ish) and letting the pressures settle out. The gauges they sell you at walmart w/ the refrigerant will only tell you the low side

I dont mean to hijack this thread but what im asking is definately related
I have a 93 LX and the AC does not blow cold but it does blow. How do I figure out if it has been converted to the newer refridgerent? If it has not been converted does anybody know the approx cost to convert it?
Im very clueless when it comes to AC.
Thank you!

look at the fittings, cost to convert= a few different ways but cheapest is evac all the r-12 out, and in theroy you should replace reciever dryer and add appropriate amount of ester oil for replacing said component, then pull system into a vac and recharge with 80% of 134a from the r-12 spec amount, but given your lack of knowledge of a/c , it's best to let a pro do it.
