Default dizzy gear stripped off...cause?

So cruising on the freeway at 70 mph the stang died. I was able to coast to a parking lot and get to it the next day. when I first began inspecting I thought the timing chain was broke as the dizzy didn't turn when I turned the crank by hand. after pulling it apart I found the timing chain intact.... then pulled the dizzy and noticed the gear was spinning free on the bottom of the shaft.

I tried reinstalling everything, repining the gear to the dizzy and restarting the car...car ran like **** or not at all with a very loud sound. I thought I miss-stabbed the dizzy so retried a few times but it still sounded really bad. im now thinking I need a full teardown to inspect but would like opinions on what may have done something like this?

the distributer is Summit racing brand and it said it has a steel gear on it.. I was told its made in china...could it just be a cheap made part or shouldn't it matter

I had an Accel distributor and the needle bearing in the dizzy overheated and locked up. Broke dizzy, TFI module, and sheared some teeth off the gear. Replaced the dizzy, pump, and driveshaft as a precaution.

hmmm that's not what I was hoping to hear.. the gear itself looks pretty good, wear marks from the bottom to about half way up. what is involved in servicing and accessing the oil pump? am I better off taking the engine out? right now I have the top half off as I was concerned I damaged something internal.

^^ like Mjr stated. Drop it enough to be able to access the bolts with hand tools and remove the pump. Huge pita imo. I know guys that yank the motor, or at least lift it enough to drop the pan completely

Ok, it sounds like I now know the scope of my teardown.. where would I want to lift the engine from? I've only done it once with help so I am by no means knowledgable about the process...also do you guys think I need to pull the cam or just a visual inspection should suffice?

Just inspect the cam gear and make sure the teeth are still good. It can be seen through the dizzy hole

Ok, I have done that a few times now and believe the teeth are all in good shape. neither gear appears to have taken any real damage, just the roll pin. I am considering a new dizzy at this point as well but am unsure of brand.

Also will take any advice I can get about pulling engine
