Idle problem is likely the beginning signs of IAC failure. Shaking is either gonna be a misfire or an engine mount, harmonic balancer failure will produce vibrations throughout the entirety of the RPM range.

Idle air control. Cylindrical thing similar to a roll of quarters, on the side of the throttle body. It controls airflow past the butteryfly when the throttle is closed.

+1, my '97 had the same problem at idle and a new IAC cured the problem.

But this would not effect the problems he is seeing at higher RPMs, unless it is stuck open? What effect would this have?

holy heck. The code readers are incredibly difficult to decipher. Any chance if I posted a video showing the series of beeps and flashes that people would be able to tell what the codes were? I am so incredibly confused.

Sorry for the delay here. Took me a while to be able to do the code reader again. This is key on, engine off:
Any help would be terrific!

If the IAC doesnt work out, check your rotor button. We just did some work on my friends 68 Torino (302 car) that we thought needed timing adjusted REALLY bad. The car had a huge difference in idle speed from when it was in park to when it was in drive. The idle speed wasreally fast and then when u put it in park, it slowed down considerably. When we started, we noticed that the timing wasnt even that much off, so we started lookin at other things and when we pulled the dist cap, the contact on the rotor button just fell off. Replaced it, and it ran just fine. Not saying this is 100% your issue, but if it's what im thinking ur meaning by the weird idle, then definitley check it.

What a crappy code reader. I have one that tells me a digital number and the problem. Mine was kinda expensive, though. About $240.
