Default Gas Tank Suddenly Leaking...

I just bought a '88 GT about a week ago. Everything was fine. The other day I went to go fill it up and the next day when I opened the garage there was a good amount of fuel on the floor. What the hell is this about? I didn't hit anything on the way home. I tried looking under there to see what's up but the guard on the tank is hiding everything so I can't pin point where it is coming from.

Anyone have any suggestions on the sudden leaking of fuel after a fill up? I'm going to pull the tank on Sunday to figure out what is going. Any suggestions before hand would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Its usually the rubber gasket between the tank and the filler tube, that needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the help. I'm assuming that is a common problem with these cars?

I should be able to pick up this gasket at the local auto parts store?

Happened to my 96. It's just a rubber grommet that goes from the tank to the filler hose. My friend who is a mechanic just dropped my tank, replaced it, and everything was fine. Didn't take him more then an hour.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I was really hoping it was something stupid and not the tank itself.

I'm going to try and tackle it today.

That's is good to hear.

I just have to disconnect the filler neck from the tank and replace the gasket then?

Even better. I'm sure it will all make sense when I get under there.

Thanks.
