Default Heat in center console

Got a 90 GT, stick. So I was driving on the highway doing an easy 80MPH chillin. Noticed heat coming up from the ash tray area? Put my hand there and ash tray cover was really warm. Where would thios heat be coming from? is there an shield or something that came off? I don't know?

Exhaust/tranny heat. Missing shields, tranny running hot, exhaust hoter than normal due to excessively lean engine

some of the things i can think of.

HUM? Will check for exhaust leaks. I did just replace the tranny fluid a few days before? It was really hot and my fear is it may shut down tranny or melt something vital while I'm on the road

I dont have any carpet in my car at the moment, but on a hot day a lot of heat always comes from that area.

See if you have the rubber boot around the shifter. A lot of heat and noise can come up from it. Also my car had a bulb under the ashtry for some reason that melted the plastic holder it was in.

Honestly..welcome to the world of older cars, my dad used to have an 86 mustang that was the same way, even my 96 would get warm around the center console, and so does my 88.

The center console shouldn't be getting that hot, though. The only part of my interior that gets warm is the shifter handle, and you can only notice it if you squeeze the shift boot against the shifter and wait for it to heat up.
