Default Noise from rear end when accelerating

I've had this strange noise for awhile now. Its a low whine from the rear that I use to hear only right around 67 mph, but now i can hear it if im giving it gas. Once i let off the gas, the noise goes away. Its not real loud, with the radio on you can't hear it, but i wondering what it could be. Maybe the oil in the rear is low?

More likely the pinion bearing is starting to die. Accelerating stresses it, decel doesn't.

Thanks mattdel, how difficult is this to replace?

Requires a teardown of the entire rear end, so might as well do a full rebuild while you're back there. full cost at a shop + parts should be around $600

Proper diag, of course, should be done. If I'm right though, the louder it gets the greater chance that the rearend goes bang, so I'd look into finding the correct answer quickly.

I described this noise as a whine, which is actually more like a very faint whistle. If the radio volume is on low, i can't hear it. Although, im pretty sure what you describe is most likely the pinion bearing.

I know of a shop that will do gears for about $400. So if i get gears done, along with the pinion bearing, what else would need to be done for a complete rebuild.

thank again!
