For my idea to work you'll need to convert to the 1993+ mini starter, otherwise I'd say you should probably use the new wire you installed to power a relay, and splice off the headlight circuit to switch the relay, sorta like the fog light fix.

I can't stress enough that this needs to be done correctly. Fox wiring is precisely the size needed to power the intended circuits (sometimes too small, too). Splicing a direct power feed from another fused circuit will cause problems, 100% guaranteed. Dash fires are the the quickest spreading.
Splicing off another circuit is a problem, however running off the fuse block will not create any problems... All you would have to do is run a jumper from an already existing accesory powered circuit onto a blank fuse location. Use a 5amp fuse if you're really worried about anything since the fuse will go right away if it senses a short. Run from that fuse spot to your gauges and voila.. You can even make your own power block but this is a bit more complicated.. Or you can a much much easier right and go with a toggle switch from a constant hot source with a heavier fuse....
