10" ranger brakes on a mustang 8.8"
As a none mustang guy, I need a little help. I am putting an 8.8" rear axle out of a 1990 Mustang into a 1963 Studebaker and want to convert it to the larger ranger 10"x2.5" brakes when I conver to 5 lug axles. Is this as simple as getting the complete brake set off of a ranger, backing plate, hardware, and drums and bolting it onto the rear end? Thanks!

you 2 need drivers side axles ranger,bronco 2, aerostar and the drums (Aerostar 86-97 will need two of the passenger side axles) the brakes are 9 inch
i believe some of the 4 liter rangers had 10inch brakes i assume you could get 2 try and get 2 driverside axles and then the backing plate off the right hand and left hand side but i dont know for sure...honestly id just stick with 9 inch brakes and be done with it
also i dunno if you already have the rear end or not(i assume you do) but you could get an 86-92 mark7 or 94-04 mustang rear axle and have disc brakes and be 5 lug

Yeahy, I already have the rear end, plus, I needed it out of a fox chassis to be the right width so I did not have to narrow it. Guess the others might be same width. My original plan was to run the 9" brakes, but the Studebaker it is going into is bigger and heavier than the Mustang, so I figured the bigger brakes would be better. I am going to see if I can locate some Ranger brakes to look at. But if the axles (1 side) will interchange, then the entire brake set-up should as well. Or at least it should!

There is a listing in parts catalogs for 87-88-89 Mustangs with 10 inch brakes they are rare most parts PDC don't stock for the mustang.......soo this makes me think they are interchangeable. I'll check NAPA and see, get back to you.

according to NAPA there is no number for the backing plates on electric catalog...BUT...that doesn't mean it's not in their paper catalog at store. I do have part numbers for the shoes and drums.
shoes= UP581R for 10X2.5 brakes rear 2 wheel drive
drums= 4401416 for 10 inch 5 hole
in googling the backing plates the 9 inch and 10 inch backing plates both look like same mounting holes to axle etc.
Hope this information will get you on your way. happy hunting

the later rangers might use a larger bearing which could make them incompatible....id take measurements of the axle length i think its something like 29.2 (dont quote me) make sure the later model ranger is the same also the bearings might be larger on the later rears(i think they are on the explorers...if you find an 8.8 in a ranger/explorer you might find a set of 4.10s you can swipe too

I am going to run with 5 lug axle kit from Summitt or Jegs. The kit includes the mustang axles, 5 lug, 28 spline, bearings studs, for less than $200. I have been told that the axles are the same as the one side of the ranger, but so far the guys I have talked to have been working on SN series rear ends and not anything as old as my 1990 Fox unit. So, unless something better comes along, I will be going with the new axles and trying to find the Ranger backing plates.
