Default Starting problem 88 Saleen

Newby here, trying to help a friend. My friends 88 Saleen started running like crap, popping out the intake and almost impossible to start. He thought it was the timing chain so he had the engine rebuilt. He reinstalled it and it has the same problem. he replaced the fuel pump & filter, had the computer checked, new adjustable fuel press regulator and he replaced most of the engine management sensors. Here's what it does. When you start cranking it, if you work the throttle pedal just right it will fire up and run. As long as you keep pumping the gas pedal it will rev up to about two grand then acts like someone shut off the fuel, when it alomst dies if you work the gas pedal it revs up again. I can keep it running like this till my foot gets tired. The fuel press is constant at 40 PSI. I'm thinking TPS, a new one should be here tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of problem. Jbird

well the poping in the intake means its lean, with that fuel pressure it shouldent be, also check to see what the tps is reading it could be a ground problem, if the tps reads 4.95-5.00 volts the tps is bad, you have a bad ground, or the pcm is shot, that is the same problem im having with mine, i bought a new tps and that did not help i checked all my grounds and they were good, so i took the computer out of my wrecked car and that was it, i could set my tps, the computer was not grounding or something. hope this helps. p.s. when you pull a motor out dont let it rain on the car if you take the hood off and just set it back on their, water must of gotten into mine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I put the new TPS on it, same problem. I started thinking about the vacuum leak suggestion. I plugged my Mighty Vac into the MAP sensor and pumped it up to 18". It started and ran like it's supposed to. Now I need to find the vacuum leak. Off comes the manifold. I'll post a couple of pics after I pull it out of the shop, under it's own power. Jay

whoa, hos. fore u take the whole manifold off, spray some carb cleaner around it. this will plug the leak for a sec, and you can find the spot thats been dried cause its in the engine.

Well I pulled the upper manifold off. I found one questionable vacuum line, to the map sensor. I replaced all the intake gaskets and vacuum hoses. It still ran like crap. I borrowed a MAP sensor and plugged it in, ran like a top. $70 bucks for a new MAP sensor and we're in business. I talked to one guy who said he'd never seen a map sensor go bad. Thanks for the advice guys. I'll see if I can post a couple of pics Monday. JayC
