Default Cowl hood/weight reduction/purpose of cowl hood?

Been thinking about investing in a cowl hood soon or atleast a fiber glass hood. Does anyone know the exact weight of an oem GT hood? Is seems heavier than most hoods I have lifted in my life. Latemodelrestoration.com sells them for 500 dollars ranging from 1.5 inch-5inches. Worth it? Also what are the major purposes of cowl hoods small - large?

Some are for looks. Others have have functions built in like heat extraction. Most guys I would say use them when they run into hood clearance issues w bigger motors and taller intakes

I need one due to my intake sitting against my fiberglass hood.

Most people either do it for A) the looks or B) the clearance on the intake, lets say for instance you have a sheet metal intake.. you are going to want more hood clearance for the intake

yea that was my observation and thought because of the bigger motors and intake manifolds. Im not one of those guys who care too much about looks but i was hoping it would be a decent weight reduction step over the stock hood. I actually saw some different ones that are cheaper around 400 dollars for a 4 inch lift off cowl w.e that is.

It means they are off road only and are just bolted/pinned to the car. Most drag racers use them. I would suggest getting one that utilized the factory hood latch mechanism along with using hood pins, just for assurance. You will see a significant weight reduction pending which manufacturer you use, just like any other part.

They say 20 pounds is typical, but I don't think mine is anywhere near that much lighter. I did mine for looks, my wife liked it!
