Default RE: Speed shift vs. powershift

JD got a q for u when i bought my 90 he said he put a king cobra clutch and a pressure plate and from moving from my old car it felt like pushing a cinder block down, i have gotten on it but my bro had a 87 gt and he said be gental b/c the syncoros for 2nd to 3rd are weak and he blew 7 t5s, u think with this it would be ok to push the shifts a bit harder
and also i talked to a guy about my car and he said they upgraded the t5s at 1990 any responses cuz i have never heard of that

thnks in advance

Th King Cobra clutch is decent unit, but be carefull with the T-5, I do know that at some point the interals were up graded but I am unsure of the year, but 1990 sounds close. The 1-2 shift is easy to power shift it's the 2-3 that most people have trouble with. Maybe just try it on the 1-2 shift till you get the hang of it. You can also power shift at half throttle, just hold the gas steady and shift really fast. I think I need to make a video showing what I mean.

Ya i think if you powershift with possibly a short throw shifter you may lose 2 tenths

1990 was the year...

I bought my 90 GT new and it was 2 months old when it dumped all the fluid in my driveway one day. The dealership said there was an order in from Ford not to fix it... They were doing full replacements only because they were trying to narrow down some issues with the new mods.... Worked out pretty good... That tranny held out into the 12s for me.

You shouldn't lose any time powershifting unless you miss a gear. IMO the magazine's referral to "speed shifting" is a friendlier term than the old "granny shifting". Two identical car race in a perfect world..one is powershifted, the other is speedshifted. The powershifted car should win b/c there is never a lift off the throttle. Personally, powershifting should only be done at the track b/c look at the all the wear and tear to just save 2/10's during street driving.

the after maket short throw shifters also have an adjustable shifter stop . this helps to keep you from bending the shifter fork when shifting hard. when you are doing a good job shifting , the rpm will not have much time to rev up because you will have the clutch released and the motor pulling again. just start out some where you can practice & maybe 1/4 throttle & work your way to wot. good luck.
