88 mustang 5.0 sputtering at high rpm
Hey I'm new to this site. I was planning on going to the track this sat but Friday night I noticed that around 4k rpms that it would start sputtering. So I decided not to go and the problem is getting worse this morning it was starting to sputter around 3800rpm to 3500 rpm. A couple weeks ago I put a new fuel filter, plugs, wires, distributed cap, and coil. BBk shorty headers installed a month ago. Timing is at sixteen I think. Previous owner set it there. But now there is a long throttle response delay, sputtering and popping noise. I am somewhat mechanically inclined. I'm thinking fuel pump but would like to see what you guys think. Thanks. Btw I haven't converted to Maf.

Timing can be dependent on the mods you have, 16 is also quite high from my own research. Mine is only up to 12-13 ( my marks are rough lol) anything over and I start to ping. Try bumping it down a bit and see what happens.

My 89 did the same thing when I brought it home. I cleaned the MAF with the special spray cleaner and it was fine after that.
IMO if its rpm and/or load related its gotta be the MAF, fuel pressure / volume, or excessive timing.
