Question Fuel mileage

I have a 1988 LX NB and I'm getting about 12 MPH. Its stock with a 5 speed, the temp gauge moves a 1/4 of the way up at operating temp. I runs great but after driving a while and it's turned off and restarted it won't idle for a few minutes maybe 2-3 then it comes back and runs fine again. I just noticed it idling at about 1200 rpms and fluctuates down to 1000 and back up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Vac lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, aic, bad gas, cats clogging up, could be a lot of things. I'd start with vac lines, fuel filter myself though.

Yeah, you should be getting mid 20's easily without gramma driving. Sounds like your temp gauge is working but don't trust its accuracy. As for the stumbling/no idle on restart, sounds like your getting raw fuel dumped in when you turn the car off (injector stuck open). Watch behind the car on restart, does it push alot of black smoke?

easily...got that with the 3.55s my freeway mpg dropped to about 26mpg. if you get some new O2's from Bosch(iirc thats fords OE maker) bump the timing up and all the wires, plus etc are in good shape its easy

May not be the problem but, the temp gauge should be around halfway. Your car is not fully warm until it gets above 180 degrees....At least I believe it is the same as the mass-air cars...
