seems like the car has a different thermostat in it that should be replaced. When it gets hot and drops back down is when the thermostat is finally opening. As far as the starting slow, rebuild it and you will fix all the issues

If by " starts up slow" you mean it cranks over longer before it starts , then yes a tune up could help this out...... plugs , wires, cap, rotor, air filter , and fuel filter.

The over heating could be from an old thermostat that just needs replaced , they get old and start sticking until it reaches a certain point then it will pop open. Or if someone replaced the thermostat at one point and put it in backwards it will do that too.. My car when I first got it did that and I thought it was a faulty thermo , but when I pulled it out someone had put it in facing the wrong direction.

Mine did the slow starting thing as well. besides what dawson said about plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter, if that doesnt help, also try the coil pack.
