Default Hard to start

on my 94 5.0 I have to hold the throttle to the floor to get it to start. The car just had a e303 cam installed and a head job. Could a vacume be ran wrong or any idea what? Also i Removed the radiator cap when the car was cold and it had alot of pressure and fluid shot all over. I strongly feel the head has blown a gasket. it runs warm at times. Does not idle well either not loffy like cam but surging up and down. just need some ideas and opinions

holding the pedal to the floor cuts the injectors off

Kinda seems unlikely that a head gasket would be blown if they were just replaced. What all is done to the car?

If your building pressure in the cooling system when the car is cold , that is a good sign the head job didn't take... or was botched some how. The radiator should not have any pressure at all when cold. Ive seen a lot of blown head gaskets and usually the first sign is cranking for extended time before starting , usually have to hold the pedal to the floor , crappy idle , white smoke out the exhaust, and running hot. eventually no start at all.

Do a compression/leak down test. Check the cooling system for hydrocarbons. I would think that if your building pressure in the radiator that quick you could smell the antifreeze and if will smell like exhaust, but there is a test kit that can be bought for cheap that checks for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant.

Watch your coolant level , look for it to drop with no explanation or visible leaks in the system , oil level may be rising also . If you check the coolant when its cold before cranking , observe if there is pressure or not there. If so relieve pressure and put the cap back on then crank the car a few times for a very short duration. Radiator should not build any pressure until the engine starts to come up to operation temp. Check the coolant again for pressure if it builds pressure from a few short cranks I would suspect the head gasket...

The old head bolts was used in the the new head work. Maybe thats the reason for the blown heads again. All those symptoms it has and like I said I also feel the head job was botched. Always when I let someone else work on my car this happens. Gonna give him a chance to fix it and if it don't work I will do it myself. Thanks for the help guys.

Well Theres your problem right there the Reused Head Bolts......

93 and up 5.0 ford used a TTY head bolt. You get one use out of them and they need replaced after that. Get a set of apr head bolts and you wont have to worry again.

yep. never. never. never. never. reuse head bolts. Chilton manual says you can reuse once, but don't do it. Besides, unless you bought the car new, how do you know the previous owner(s) didn't reuse them already? Right? Now, it's out with the old and in with new. Good luck!

Sorry to reply so late. I did A head job on my 90 ssp coup and it turned out great with a set of cobra heads. Now I will be doing the heads on the 94 soon. Man I hope this works out for me. The 94 has always been nothing but trouble since I had it

get the arp head studs. they disperse pressure more evenly over the head and are stronger than bolts
