gauge and blinker problems
 

Hello friends. I am having a bit of a problem with my gauges and I'm a little stumped. I have read some of the other threads but haven't found anything quite like my issue. I have 1991 5.0 Lx. My issue is that at random times when iI start my car I will notice that my voltage gauge will stick at the mark above half and will not move. When this happens my turn signals will not work. Now I can shut the car off and so far it has seems to reset the.problem but it will do it again the next time I get in the car. About a year or so ago I replaced the regulator behind the gauges. It looked like a small circuit board and pretty expensive also. Has any one had any problems like this or any ideas. I'm sure its looking me right in the face thank you all in advance for any advice

If shutting off resets it, I'd wager a guess that the problem stems from the ignition switch on the column. They tend to fall apart and can do any number of weird things.

As mattdel stated, the ignition switch would be a solid place to start.

I was puzzled by this and thought about it for awhile...when you shut your car off, does the needle for volts go to that same position it gets stuck on? I know some instruments in other cars do...was curious. If that's the case...maybe they're returning to the "off" position because they're not getting power? Could explain why your blinkers aren't working when this occurs too, and why restarting the car fixes it.

Im sorry it took so long to get back. I think the switch is the problem i have a couple of questions I'm trying to figure out. I looked at the actual place where the key goes in and turns the tumbler. When I have these issues I can some times wiggle the key or the wire that goes to the.cylinder and everything goes back to normal. Is the cylinder where the key goes what I need to change or is it the piece that looks like aplug a little lower from it? If so how hard are these to do? Thanks again
