Doubt the cats are causing it. There are no o2 sensors to check the cats operation. Get the codes pulled and see what you got. You can pull the codes using a paper clip and check engine light. Just search google for it.

Default thanks.. autozone is a no go.. will try o'reilly

thanks guys, I took the car to autozone and apparently my 92 does not have an ODB2 input, so they couldn't scan it. They said O'Reilly can do it with the EEC connector? Does that sound right?... . I'll take it there this afternoon and let you know what I find out
