trans woes
So for all the trans guru's out there that can help, I've been having problems with my trans. I got a 94 gt auto. Within the last couple weeks I've been having problems with reverse. Once its warmed up the car wouldn't move till about 1800. Well as of yesterday once its warmed up it won't move until 5k or so and now even in D it won't start moving till 1600 or 1800.
I'm already looking for another trans locally but is it needed? I was reading on other forums that the TC may be the cause. Also the trans was rebuilt by the dealership at around 40k miles or so. Dont have the peperwork in front of me. The car currently has 182k on it. Also when looking at a used trans is there anything I should check or can check for signs if its junk or not? Thanks |
Have you checked the fluid lately?
|
It was a little low when I checked it yesterday. About a 1/4 quart

get a new/ reman tranny or face the same or other issues again
|
That's the ultimate goal but for now just don't have the available cash for that. So any tell tale signs to look for?
|
none, buying used trannies is like rolling the dice at a craps table in a casino
|
Especially an automatic.

^^^+1 to that

Cracks , signs of droppage, I mean what can you look for externally that will give you an indication of the trans history? Burnt fluid. I tend to stay away from automatics when buying a car. I don't enjoy driving an auto as much as a manual and I seem to have really bad luck when it comes to auto trans. Truth is with an auto trans especially , you can buy a used one with no warrenty and it could last 200,000 miles, or it may be in perfect condition when it was pulled and in 1,000 miles it could fall to pieces. You just never can tell with a trans. Ive seen used trans that when pulled were working great and once installed work great for 3 months then start failing.
Best thing to do when buying used trans is know your seller. If its a junk yard ask about a 60 0r 90 day warrenty if something goes wrong you could exchange it. |
Just avoid a used auto trans like the plague. But low fluid, dirty filter can do all kinda of weird things.
